Oddiyanam

Oddiyanam (Odiyanam) is a belly/waist that was worn as a regular part of adornment in ancient India (Wearing of this type of waist-chain has also been traced back to some parts of Africa). Some have speculated that the original intention of this jewelry was designed to hold up a sari and keep the spine straightened, but the most agreed upon theory of use was that it was worn as a waistline trimmer. The odiyanam would be fastened around the waist after the wearer had sucked in their stomach to create a slimmer waist appearance. The tightness of the odiyanam supposedly would stop the waist from expanding any larger and create a more womanly proportional body by keep the midsection slim and guiding the hips to become larger. A small waist and large hips was considered a sign of beauty and womanhood in olden days.
